Taking care of small dogs can be quite challenging to many dog owners. However, once you get used to it and because of the love you have for your dog, you will find a lot of joy in doing it. Just as is the case for human beings, small dogs and other pets require a lot of good care from their keepers. In fact, taking care of small dogs comes with a lot of responsibilities which you must be prepared for before you decide to own aoneg. They say nothing good comes without a cost and that adage also applies to small dogs.

Most small dogs are relatively active. In taking care of them therefore, you need to walk them daily if only to prevent behavioral problems associated with being idle.

Pay attention to your small dog especially when in the company of strangers or crowds. Even the best socialized dog is likely to feel threatened and may become defensive in the company of strangers or crowds. Paying attention to your small dog’s location at any one time also ensures its safety. Dogs can slip outside with the constant opening and closing of doors, some can climb onto counters and tables or even disappear under a pile of clothes. Ensure that your dog stays fit by preventing him from engaging in risky behaviors like jumping off furniture and climbing too many stairs among many other activities.

Also, taking care of small dogs, requires that you groom them well. The kind of grooming that you undertake on them will vary from one breed to another and from one dog owner to another. Whereas some small dogs will require that their coats are trimmed regularly, others may go for long periods without the need for a cut. In fact, rather than consistently trimming your dog’s coat, you can also wrap the long silk fur as this prevents split ends and mating problems. You can unwrap the locks and comb it out to its full length when you wish.

Most small dogs require great supervision and you must remember this when taking care of them. Too much rough play could hurt your dog or could have your child hurt as your dog tries to defend himself. You do not want to endanger the life of your child or that of your small dog by failing to supervise them. Indeed, some dogs require a lot of supervision as they are quite fragile and can easily be injured or killed if left unsupervised. A good example is the fact that larger dogs can attack them or as indicated earlier, they can hurt themselves by jumping off furniture.

Taking care of small dogs also demands that you maintain hygiene standards for your dog. This can range from bathing them, brushing his teeth to cleaning the area in which your dog lives as well as its surroundings. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. Clean up the place where your dog defecates and urinates or, maintain timely routines for walks or let him out for his toilet needs. If he gets out to the yard, keep him away from tall grass or bushes as he could be easy prey for dangerous snakes in tall grass.

In a nutshell, taking care of small dogs is not an easy responsibility for any dog owner but the joys brought along by them tend to overshadow these responsibilities. If you do not take good care of your small dogs, you may very well be putting their lives in danger.
